FIGHTING RESISTANCE
Minimising the development of antimicrobial resistance in animals through prudent prescribing has become an essential part of the veterinarian’s role in the 21st century.
The majority of antimicrobial use in New Zealand dairy practice is for mastitis, so the need for responsible use is greatest in this area. Fortunately, our most common major pathogens, Strep. uberis and Staph. aureus, both have narrow spectrum treatment options such as penicillin and cloxacillin that remain efficacious, with no evidence that resistant isolates such as MRSA are present in dairy cattle. This means that NZ veterinarians can prescribe responsibly without compromising on results.
